ROCKSOUND REVIEW april 1999

`Undefined` ( music for nations )
The Soundisciples are the next big thing. Oh yes . . . In a collision between Fear Factory, the Prodigy, FLA, and God knows how many other artists, the Soundisciples have taken the best bits of contemporary alternative music ranging from Drum `n` Bass to speed metal and sculptured something entirely of their own. It even includes Portishead`s Beth Gibbons as a guest vocalist ! Opening songs `Jesus biting Nails` and `Let it rain` are fearsome aggro-industrial dance anthems, pulsating break-beats duelling with savage riffing. `Withdraw from life` is electro-doom metal, whilst the introduction `Isolation` and the deeply ambiguous `Heroin` are darkley organic textures. That's not to say that Soundisciples don`t have their own identity as everything here sounds like the work of one unified band. Undifined is totally engaging, and should be a benchmark for alternative music at the end of the millennium.

METAL HAMMER REVIEW march 1999

`Undefined` is one of the most intense records you`ll hear this spring. What`s crucial here is that nothing is sacrificed: each musical idea is pursued to extremity, each genre played with and used is found in it`s purest hardest-core state. Opener `Isolation` cruises on pulsating electro, `Let it Rain` digs up some hellish Gabba and `Downcide` is a high-rolling, full-on tech step assault. Throughout, layered chrome textured riffs get warped and shredded over the rhythmic chassis: on `Cyberotica` they`re slammed together in one ass-quaking fix, and on the stunning `Never or Forever` it`s like Junkie XL or the Prodigy taken even further onto bass-heavy, dubbed out depths. By the time `Whore of Babylon` winds things up in an orgy of fizzing, shorted out bleeps and grinding funk you know that Soundisciples aren`t just a band to watch in 99 - they`re a conceptual firestorm that could and should squeeze out this kind of greatness for some time yet. The start of something terrifying. Get scarred shitless.

KERRANG INTERVIEW EXTRACT march 99

`With Pitchshifter bridging the gap between metal and techno, a whole new generation of noise terrorists have been inspired to take the resultant sonic hybrid to ever more extreme levels. Bristol`s Soundisciples are helping to lead the charge. The bands `Undefined` LP, is already one of the best debut albums of the year: a dank gloomy take on electronic heaviness wherein alternate layers of techno-fied beats and gothic ambience bolster unrelentingly grinding guitars.`

TOWER RECORDS

New Brit entries SOUNDISCIPLES have constructed one of the most impressive debut albums in a while with Undefined (Peaceville/Music For Nations)****. Dance beats lock horns with big guitars and aggressive vocals, with supremely satisfying results on high-energy outings like 'Jesus Biting Nails' and 'Russian Roulette', while epics like the cyber-Zeppelin 'Chaos In Motion' and 'Heroin' prove that Soundisciples have more than one string to their bow. Their grasp of gothic drama and songwriting suggests they will go far.
